Historic venue makes comeback as high-brow hotel

Visitors to Sheffield looking for a spot of luxury are in luck, with the unique Halifax Hall Hotel officially opening its doors to the public today.

The boutique venue, which started out as a steel baron’s mansion and then became a University of Sheffield Hall of Residence, is set in the University’s landscaped Endcliffe Village gardens.

Tonight it was throng with guests at an official launch event, where its 38 decadently appointed bedrooms, conference rooms and fine food were unveiled.

The building has now had its third transformation, with a £1.8million makeover, creating a contemporary hotel retaining many of its period features.

Halifax Hall has been trading since the summer, and within nine weeks had risen to number one ranked Sheffield hotel on Trip Advisor.

“We’re really pleased with the reaction to the hotel so far,” said Halifax Hall Hotel General Manager Paul Foster.

“People seem to like the local flavour of the venue, with its historical relevance, as well as the food on offer which includes local dishes given a modern and unique twist, mostly sourced from high-quality producers in and around Sheffield.”

“Former students are particularly excited about the launch – we have had 300 University alumni stay at the hotel already, and four reunion events booked in from people who lived there in the 1960s,” he said.

“With business growth in conferences and events forecast over the next five years, we’re hoping to bring plenty of business to the city as one of the finest hotels in the area, for leisure visitors, as well as University visitors, corporate events and weddings.”

“We’ve also partnered up with another South Yorkshire business – We Love Sleep – to design a restful night for all our guests, with specialist, top-quality sleep products and bedding. We believe we are one of the first UK hotels to work with a sleep consultant in this way.”

Guests at the official opening event were treated to a wine masterclass by Neil Phillips Hill, known on TV and radio as The Wine Tipster, music, entertainment, and fine British canapés designed by Halifax Hall head chef Steve James.

Money was raised for Sheffield Children’s Hospital from an auction of a free night’s stay, as well as food, wine and champagne prizes.  For more information about Halifax Hall Hotel visit www.halifaxhall.co.uk/, follow @HalifaxHall or www.facebook.com/HalifaxHall
